The Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has advocated that the process of adopting children in the country ought to be improved so individuals who are intrigued won’t be discouraged. He also called for increased education on the requirement for more Nigerians to embrace child adoption in order to save vulnerable children in the nation. Osinbajo conveyed this keynote address on Thursday at the second Annual Conference of the Heritage Adoption Support and Advocacy Group, at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. “I don’t think there is anything that can be more considerable than bringing vulnerable kids under a home where they would be taking care of. “We also require men that are focused on the advocacy for the adoption process.
“Adoption is in God’s arrangement. How you come about a child is in God’s arrangement – either by birth or by adoption,” Osinbajo said. Also speaking, the Pastor-in-Charge of Trinity House, Victoria Island, Lagos, Ituah Ighodalo, said individuals ought to be urged to adopt a child if they felt the need. Ighodalo identified the role of the church in child adoption to include supplicating and guiding those interested. Nigerian billionaire businesswoman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, said endeavors must be made to clarify the minds of the individuals who felt that child adoption was an unthinkable. “It (campaign for child adoption) is long over; we have to sensitize the people and given them a chance to know that adopting a child is certainly not a taboo,” Alakija said. In his presentation, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mr Agboola Dabiri, said child adoption was perceived in the Child Rights Act as a method for offering help to vulnerable children.
