A lecturer at the Lagos State University, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, has urged the youths in leadership positions to focus on the alleviation of poverty in the society.
Ashafa along with Hon. Bakare Ibrahim, Councilor of Ward B, Okokomaiko, Iba Local Council Development Area, said spoke at a poverty alleviation program in the area. The poverty alleviation program sponsored by Ibrahim saw pupils given educational materials, youths supported with equipment, and donation of cash to widows.
Ashafa who doubles as the President of the Muslim Students’ of Nigeria (MSSN) in Lagos State, explained that alleviating poverty would aid peace in the society. While commending the councilor for the initiative, Ashafa urged other youths in a leadership position to ensure the empowerment of their constituents.
He said, “Indeed, this program would go a long way to eradicate poverty in our midst. Most of the people here are poor, therefore it will help them. Surprisingly, his office is not receiving any constituency allowance. Others in leadership positions, especially youths should emulate this. The program will definitely have a good effect on the beneficiaries. Those that are not fortunate to receive today should be considered in the next programme.”
On his part, Ibrahim advised youths in leadership positions to set good examples by empowering their constituents.
