About 60 percent of maternal deaths worldwide occur in humanitarian crisis,; wars, natural disaster, refugee camps etc. This was disclosed by the United Nations Population Fund in their annual report titled ‘State of World Population” just released in London by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin.

According to the report about 500 pregnant women (teenagers and adults) die globally every day in human crisis situations mentioned above due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth made worse by lack of access to healthcare, lack of medicines and poor preparedness for crisis.

He advocates prevention, preparedness and empowerment of women to address the problem.
