At a one-day advocacy and sensitization for media houses on the need to enlighten the people of Adamawa state ahead of the one week massive birth registration flag-off in the state, the Head of Department on vital registration of the commission, Innocent Mishikir has disclosed that the National Population Commission (NPoC) in collaboration with UNICEF/EU has listed Adamawa State as the least in birth registration in the North-East and the need to involve the media in the enlightenment of the importance of birth registration.
He described the number of birth registration in the state as “grossly inadequate” from January to date only 87,748 children were registered which comprises of 41,890 females and 45,858 males. The UNICEF information Officer, Mr. Samuel Kaalu also said that non-registration of a child among others is contravention of the child’s right to identity as stipulates in the Convention of the Right of the Child (CRC) as stipulated by UNICEF.
