China is to end the one child per couple policy put in place in 1979 to curb its rapid its population growth. However this policy has resulted in unexpected demographic distortion with the country having far more women than men; couples killed baby girls because they wanted a male child. Recent study revealed that by 2020, there will be 30 miilion more women than men prompting one economist to recommend that two men marry one wife or that men marry themselves. With the new policy, each couple can have two children
Some human rights groups are dissatisfied with this position insisting Government has no business in controlling the number of children a couple can have.
