The leader of the study team at St. Michaels’ Hospital, Canada, Dr. Jonathan Maguire (a paediatrician), said that over-the counter cough and cold medicines could endanger lives of children under the age of 2 years because of the ingredients they contain. The study also shows that as many as one in five kids treated with such drug under age six can be harmed by them.
Besides the study team found that the drugs are ineffective; with no real benefits and the potential harm the children, the study recommends that they should not be used for children under 2 years of age.
The study involved the analysis of medical records of 3,500 children from 2008 to 2011.
