The tendency to consume is quite high during festive period; alcohol could be consumed in high volumes during such a period. While alcohol may have some benefits when taken in moderation, excessive intake has immediate complications.
The health tips of today are meant to remind ourselves of the immediate dangers of excessive alcohol intake especially during a festive period or celebration.
1.Accidents
All over the world the number of road traffic is known to increase during festive periods partly due to excessive alcohol intake. Consequently, persons who are drunk are not allowed to drive in developed countries and if involved in road accidents go to jail.
Alcohol impairs brain function it causes loss of nerve sensation and nervous system control of muscles. Rising alcohol level in the blood impairs vision, balance and judgment. Assessing distances is less acute and decisions less coordinated.
2.Violence.
Excessive alcohol intake contributes to violent behavior which can lead to unnecessary fights, maiming or death. Alcohol impairs brain function it causes loss of nerve sensation and nervous system control of muscles. Rising alcohol level in the blood impairs vision, balance and judgment. Excessive alcohol removes the restrain on unacceptable behavior, consequently the person is loquacious, abuse and aggressive.
3.Embarrassment
Being drunk causes a lot of embarrassment to the immediate family due to violent behavior, vomiting and loss of consciousness, sometimes, in most embarrassing locations.
4. High Blood Pressure/Stroke
Blood pressure can shoot up following excessive alcohol intake, for those who are hypertensive that could be very dangerous, a few have had stroke.
5.Temporary Impotence/ Erectile Dysfunction.
One of the known causes of impotence is alcohol. When taken in small quantity, it gives the drinker a feeling of happiness and increase desire and maybe performance but after some quantities alcohol becomes a depressant. The drinker may have the sexual desire but will not be able to perform. Alcohol dulls performance. This failure, if not properly managed can lead to impotence.
According to Shakespeare in Macbeth, “It (alcohol) provides the desire but takes away the performance”.
6.Death
Many people have died from accident even at home due to alcohol, from road traffic accidents, from stroke following sudden increase in blood pressure and from breathing in their vomit when unconscious.
Moderation is therefore the key during any festive period or celebration.
We must learn to control our drinking habits during festivities.
