About 700 babies are lost daily in Nigeria due to preventable diseases and avoidable conditions. This was stated by an official of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. Evelyn Agbanyim, in Awka, Anambra State, South east Nigeria, during an awareness campaign on neonatal deaths.
According to her, the causes of the deaths which occur within the first 28 days of life (neonatal deaths) include low birth weight, inability to breathe and infections (tetanus, bronchopneumonia etc); she added that neonatal deaths account for about 80 percent of deaths in children.
The campaign is meant to highlight the magnitude of the problem and adise on preventive measures.
