Jigawa spend N573m on health infrastructure

As part of Jigawa state Government’s determination to bring health  facilities closer to the people, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abba Zakari, has told newsmen, yesterday, that the state government has spent over N573 million on the construction of 27 primary healthcare centres and 27 midwives staff quarters. He said the new health facilities were provided in each of the 27 local government areas in the state, adding “the gesture was to address the shortage of health care facilities and shortage of manpower in the health sector.” He added that the funds were generated through counterpart funding with the Millennium Develop-ment Goals, MDGs.

As part of the World Health Organization’s activities to bring down whopping Obesity, The UN health agency on Tuesday has urged countries to start taxing sugary beverages as they fight against an obesity epidemic, pointing to evidence that price hikes can dramatically reduce consumption, with one in three adults overweight. WHO also concluded in a new report that there is reasonable and increasing evidence that appropriately designed taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages would result in proportional reductions in consumption, especially if aimed at raising the retail price by 20 percent or more.

The Nigerian Optometric Association, NOA, has called for more awareness on eye health and vision care among the populace with a view to preventing blindness through knowledge and information. In a statement to announce activities to mark this year’s World Sight Day in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, the National President of NOA, Dr. Damian Echendu said out of the 285 million, 80 percent of it can be preventable, adding that 4 out of 5 blind people are needlessly impaired.   Echendu hinted that this year’s celebration will focus on enlightening members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW.

 Abia State:  The state government has warned all medical doctors in the state, who allegedly abandon their statutory duties for private practice that those caught, would be sanctioned. The commissioner for Health, Dr  John Ahukanna said the ministry was disturbed  by the attitude of  some doctors, who  instead of working conscientiously in the hospitals they are posted to, spend more time in their private clinics.  Dr. Ahukanna appealed for a change of attitude to work and more commitment to their statutory duties warning that if there was no appreciable change sanctions would be the appropriate option.  In his brief with the newsmen, in Umuahia,  the  commissioner disclosed that the ministry has given the newly constituted Hospitals Management Board  directive to constitute a monitoring team to supervise the activities of the doctors  and other health workers in government health institutions and report  regularly to him for appropriate action. …

The Bayelsa state executive council, during the weekend approved the employment of 65 medical personnel and setting up of a Direct Labour Agency (DLA) for the State.
